The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a mandatory emissions trading scheme, designed to reduce the volume of carbon emitted in the UK and promote improvements in energy efficiency.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is part of the government’s programme for achieving a 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 as mandated by the Climate Change Act.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme launched on April 1st 2010 and will affect up to 5,000 organisations, who qualify as full participants based on their electricity consumption.

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme started on the 1st April 2010 - have you registered?

Qualification for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is based on the amount of electricity consumed through a half hourly meter in the 2008 qualification year.

If the combined consumption through half hourly meters across the whole organisational group was greater than 6,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) then the organisation group must participate in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

An organisational group is made up of all organisations that are considered to be a subsidiary of the ultimate parent organisation.

Full participants in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme will be required to measure and monitor their carbon emissions and purchase carbon allowances, which will be sold for £12 per tonne of carbon during the first phase of the scheme (2010-2013)

In April 2011 companies participating in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme will have to buy carbon allowances for the forthcoming year. The costs of participating in the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme heighten the need to start reducing carbon emissions.

The revenue earned by the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is recycled back to the participants. The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme League Table is published annually to highlight achievements in reducing carbon and to distribute revenue in line with performance.

Let us take care of everything for you

Here are some ways we can help you prepare for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme.

1. Make sure you understand how the CRC Scheme works

Like any new piece of legislation, many organisations find the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme complicated at first glance. It doesn’t have to be. Envido can help you understand the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and its implications for your organisation as well as taking away the administrative burden of the registration process.

2. Implement Early Action Metrics

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme provides incentives for companies to invest in Automated Meter Readers (or Smart Meters) before April 2011.

Smart Meters enable more effective tracking and analysis of energy consumption than with traditional manually read meters, making CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme reporting easier. We can help you install Smart Meters - click here for more information.

The Carbon Trust Standard also contributes to the early action metric as part of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. Envido can assist in achieving this standard - click here for more information on this Standard and how we can help you gain accreditation.

3. Make your carbon reporting easier

Compliance with the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme requires ongoing management of energy consumption data and allowances. Envido can remove the administrative burden by undertaking data collection and allowance management on your behalf.
