The Challenges
To position themselves as a sector lead on sustainability issues and manage the company’s environmental risk BDO wanted to establish a carbon reduction strategy reduce. Envido was hired to review existing polices and embed the controls and practices to reduce year-on-year emissions and encourage green behaviour in the workplace.

Envido consultants put in place the systems and technology to implement a measurable and targeted energy and carbon reduction plan that also delivered a meaningful return on investment. A scope 1 & 2 organisational footprint was taken, estate-wide automatic metering installed and ISO140001 environmental management systems implemented.

Using this monitoring and reporting framework, Envido deployed its Virtual Energy manager (VEM) service to reduce energy consumption across all BDO sites.
Cost effective and flexible our VEM monitors and examines BDOs energy use profile to identify and realise energy saving initiatives. Drawing on Envido’s specialist disciplines from low-carbon engineering and facilities management to forensic on-site energy auditing we ensured BDO’s goals are met.

The Outcomes/Benefits
A 2011 carbon reduction target of 10% was met with 700t CO2 mitigated – equivalent to 90 average UK homes. Financially, £160,000 was saved annually, with £500,000 anticipated to be saved within three years following implementation. The payback period for this activity was just over one year.
