£1 million energy reduction plan mapped for leading colleges
Cambridge University has a reputation for excellence in sustainability, energy and environmental science. Spanning 551,000m2 of floor area its 300 buildings include historic listed buildings to modern biomedical facilities and present a complex range of energy issues.
In line with the University, several colleges wanted to assess their carbon liabilities and identify opportunities to better manage their combined £.5 million annual energy costs to inform capital planning. Mandatory CRC energy efficiency scheme participation has added additional impetus for action.
Envido was invited to support each of the colleges to determine the greatest energy saving at the best economic cost.
The Envido Solution
Initial scoping and benchmarking identified properties where the greatest saving were possible and investigate further.
Envido energy assessors, using CIBSE TM22 methodology, reviewed existing on-site metering, building fabric, plant efficiency and controls and energy management practices.
Using this information low-carbon technologies were recommended, prioritised by their ROI potential. To support the colleges, an implementation roadmap was also developed.
Our change division led a master class to up-skill the colleges energy managers in staff and student engagement to encourage energy saving behaviours and reduce emissions further.
Annual energy savings identified exceeded £1 million for measures meeting the colleges’ three year payback criteria. Smart metering, BMS scheduling and plant optimisation, controls and technology upgrade were all suggested. Fitzwarren College alone was found to have the potential to save 2 million kWh of gas per annum from one heating project alone.
“Envido’s involvement is enabling colleges to optimise the cost and carbon savings from CAPEX while the master classes have stimulated ideas to effectively motivate students to save energy.”
