IS014001 and technology supply helps auditor to 25% energy reductionsGrant Thornton case study for ISO14001 Envido client

The Client

Grant Thornton is an award-winning audit, tax and advisory firm that services major FTSE 100 clients. It is also the number one auditor of AIM listed companies and with 4,000 UK-based employees based across its 27 offices. The firm gives environmental performance equal weighting to financial and business goals.d

The Challenge

Optimising operating profit while minimising overhead helps to make Grant Thornton a successful business. Recognising that identification and management of major environmental impacts reduces business risk, contributes to bottom line performance and underpins corporate reputation, Grant Thornton called on Envido’s expertise and track record of implementing corporate environmental management system (EMS).

The Envido Solution

Envido implemented a bespoke ISO14001-certified management system at the company’s headquarters and trained its in-house staff on its use. This initial phase enabled the client to qualify for several new tender opportunities.
Once established and the benefits realised by the client, Envido rolled out the system across 20 of its major locations, enabling Grant Thornton to prioritise company-wide actions and allocate necessary resource effectively.

The Grant Thornton team identified energy consumption as a major risk and opportunity for improvement and used Envido to identify energy saving opportunities via forensic onsite energy auditing. Envido’s engineering team installed technology solutions including lighting and VSD to fans and motors to reduce Grant Thornton’s annual utility bills.

The Outcomes

Grant Thornton’s business development was immediately enhanced, as ISO14001 certification enabled the company to qualify for new major tenders. The EMS and Envido’s on-site energy consumption assessments have enabled Grant Thornton to identify an overall 25% energy reduction potential over a five year period.

A number of low-carbon technologies have been installed. For example, lighting upgrade has realised savings of 96,000kWh, equivalent to a £12,000 or 52tCO2 per annum.

“We needed EMS expertise and a supplier that could help us deliver energy efficiency improvements. Envido had the perfect consultancy and technology installation capability to help., as well as a great practical attitude to getting things done.”
