Champion network helps bank Go Green
The Client
Santander UK plc. is one of the country’s largest providers current accounts, savings, mortgages, loans. It is committed to adopting sustainable management practices and encourages its workforce to actively reduce their the environmental impact.
The Challenge
Through its company-wide staff engagement initiative, ‘Go Green’, Santander encourages the workforce to improve performance across energy, waste and business travel issues.
But, with a head office and branch network comprising 1,200 UK sites, the company needed a communication and engagement partner with relevant technical knowledge to set up a network of staff champions charged with embedding positive change at their site.
The Envido Solution
After recruiting staff during a series of environmental roadshow events, we trained and supported these champions providing them with an toolkit of resources, a live technical helpdesk and shared learning and tips and updated the champions on the initiative’s progress via Santander’s dedicated environmental intranet – the Village Green.
The toolkits covered each sustainability theme and included practical ‘how to’ guidance, communication advice and a number of ‘planet saving’ tips. Armed with this information, champions knew where savings could be made, the behaviours staff could adopt, and how best to influence their colleagues to make that change.
The Envido-managed helpdesk provided champions with access to environmental experts, on-hand to quickly answer their questions. Santander staff could also submit ideas about how the bank could become a greener company, empowering champions to actively improve environmental performance at their location. The Village Green intranet site acted as a vehicle to update, motivate and engage champions with regular articles shared learning and blog post from the networks.

The Outcomes
A network of over 110 champions has helped to deliver long-lasting savings across Santander’s offices and branch network, which are increasingly taking responsibility for their own environmental impacts. Recycling has increased 11% and use of video conferencing has significantly reduced business travel.
