Virgin Media cuts energy by £6 million with Envido energy management expertise
The Client
Virgin Media provides digital TV, phone and ultrafast cable broadband to over half of UK homes. When it comes to sustainability, they want to ‘get it right on the things that matter most’. including reducing estate carbon emissions. The company enlisted Envido to help.
The Challenges
Annual energy spend is c£50million. A robust and systematic energy management was essential to combat rising utility bills and to reduce emissions. The challenge was to implement a workable management framework and verify the data across Virgin Media’s 800 offices, data houses, shops and several thousand remote data exchanges.
The Envido Solution
Envido energy management specialists advised Virgin Media to work towards the BS EN 16001 certification. Internationally recognised, the standard facilitates the active targeting of energy wastage and brings additional reputational benefit as it would boost CRC the Performance League Table ranking.
We implemented BS EN 160001 certification, verifying a three year CO2 reduction of 6.1% per RGU2, embedding the energy management framework and processes on-site and training relevant staff across the business.
Recognising the synergies we also helped the company achieve ISO 14001 for its Environmental Management System.

The Outcomes/Benefits
Envido helped Virgin Media achieve BS EN 160001 and ISO140001 certification. Annual energy cost and consumption has fallen by 12% and improved forecasting has released significant capital historically accrued to cover utility bill errors.
Management system certification is also supporting business development. The company now pre-qualifies for more large corporate and public sector contracts and its top quartile CRC position has enhanced its environmental reputation.
