New Defra-funded research confirms that implementing environmental management systems (EMS) improve sales and reduce costs of 9 out of 10 SMEs.

According to the results of the Defra-funded study one third of businesses achieved new business sales of £14,961 per £m turnover in the year following certification while average costs fell by £4,830.

The payback period was only three-months for the cost savings and just one-month for the new business sales. The study calculated EMS Implementation and certification costs at £1,362 per £m turnover on average.

According to Envido’s Senior Energy and Sustainability Consultant, Oliver Ingwall King, “legal compliance is the key driver in the manufacturing sector, whereas service companies such as hoteliers retailers and the professional services benefit most from increased sales and marketing opportunities.

Resource availability and expertise are the typical stumbling blocks to implementation but Envido can help. We can support EMS implementation, embedding user-friendly procedures and documentation and training staff to efficiently manage the system.

Envido provide support on environmental management systems including ISO14001, ISO50001, the Energy Reduction Verification Kitemark and the Carbon Trust Standard to a wide variety of organisations including major FTSE brands and public sector organisations.

DECC has launched a consultation that will help NHS hospitals cut red tape from the EU Emissions Trading System.

The proposals contain positive news for small emitters and hospitals, who would be able to ‘opt-out’ from 2013, a move that addresses the disproportionate administrative burden they incur on a per tonne of CO2 emitted basis.

Administrative costs for small emitters and hospitals are 96% higher per tonne than larger emitters at £1/tCO2versus £0.04/tCO2.

Extending police outsourcing to include energy management can save up to £150,000 per constabulary. Many forces are currently exploring a range of outsource options, including some operational duties as they respond to the Government’s austerity drive. But energy management for each force, which is less provocative and offers significant cost-saving potential is often overlooked.

Energy solution providers, such as Envido, have the full range of specialist expertise and tools to improve performance and reduce yearly energy expenditure by around 10%. With typical police force annual gas and electricity costs in the £1million to £2.5 million region, the scope for cost reduction could be significant.

In-house energy teams are often time pressured or lack certain specialist skills to optimise energy performance across an estate often comprising over 200 buildings.

Envido’s complete outsourcing solution is called carbonmanager365. It provides flexible access to over 80 specialists and resources via a flexible menu-based approach. Support covers four key areas: on-going energy monitoring, energy saving opportunity assessments, compliance management (e.g. CRC).

Chief Constables have the option to outsource the complete energy function or complement their in-house team with carbonmanager365. A key benefit of the service is its energy reduction performance guarantee. The guarantee enables police forces to transfer delivery risk to Envido. If agreed agreed energy reduction targets are not met then nothing is paid.

To facilitate energy outsourcing Envido can transfer existing energy managers into Envido via TUPE. Not only will this reduce staff overhead, it provides continuity of service and on-going employment for police force energy managers.

carbonmanager365 energy outsourcing:

Flexible access to 80+ specialist energy management skills

Reduce overheads or employer responsibilities associated with salaried staff

consultants have full range of expertise and experience

only pay for the support you need

transfer risk via an energy performance guarantee

London’s fastest growing energy-efficiency company opens its first Scotland office today [3 May 2012] to tap into local green skills and growth opportunities.

The company, Envido opens its new Glasgow office as part of a regional expansion that brings it closer to Scotland’s major industrial and commercial base and to its clients with such as RBS, Investec, BSkyB and the NHS.

With five offices until today, Leeds was previously Envido’s most northerly location. According to the company director Mr Russell Lerman, Glasgow is an ideal place to expand and grow its energy analysts and low-carbon engineering teams.

Mr Lerman says:

“Envido is looking to expand its team across Scotland. Glasgow was an obvious choice for our first base as it gives ready access to a pool of low-carbon engineering skills and a growing green collar workforce that will help the firm grow.

“Although Scotland’s transformation to a green energy economy is well ahead the rest of the UK, local industry commerce and the public sector have the highest level of heat and power consumption per capita.

“The SNP Government’s target to achieve 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2020 is commendable, but Scotland’s reducing energy costs that will benefit Scotland’s private and public sector in the short term.

Energy reduction supports growth

Reducing energy by one fifth can add over 7 per cent to bottom line profit and can help to support the balance sheet when organic growth is harder to come by.

“The 33% rise to in the carbon price floor in the recent budget has means that Scottish energy-intensive businesses in particular should look to re-double energy conservation efforts,” says Mr Lerman.

Envido helps organisations to save energy, money and carbon by identifying and prioritising their major saving opportunities and installing energy saving technologies.

The floor area threshold for public buildings requiring Display Energy Certificates drops from January 2013.

Public sector facilities and energy managers need to begin adapting metering strategies to allow for the considerable increase in the number of buildings that will soon need a Display Energy Certificates.

Currently, only public buildings with a floor area of 1,000 sq m or above need a DEC, but from 9th January, 2013 public buildings with a floor area greater than 500 sq m will be required to have a Display Energy Certificate in place. The threshold then falls to 250 sq m in 2015 with the changes resulting from recent revisions to the Energy Performance of Buildings directive.

To have sufficient consumption data in place in time, organisational metering needs to be reviewed and sub meters installed before the new threshold is applied.

DEC threshold implications

Gas and electricity consumption data for a 12 month period is required to produce a DEC and whilst supplier invoices can be used, the potential inaccuracy from estimated read invoices can lead to inaccurate DEC ratings. Further problems arise when quarterly invoices – typical for smaller sites – are supplied as the 12 month consumption period may fall between invoice cycles, meaning further estimation of consumption for the required 12 months!

The sub-metering, recording and verification of metered consumption is the only true method by which accurate consumption data for individual buildings of an auditable quality can be obtained to ensure the accuracy of a DEC.

It is these smaller 500 sq m buildings that may have been left out of previous sub-metering retrofits on a cost:benefit basis. The forthcoming changes to DECs provides impetus to assimilate buildings with a floor area of 500 sq m into metering plans.

Envido can help – DEC and metering

Envido can help determine which of your organisation’s buildings will fall under the new DEC regulations, install sub-metering, develop a meter reading and consumption data management strategy, and ultimately produce DECs to ensure compliance and avoid potential fines.

Whatever your view, the fact that the NHS in England’s footprint levelled off in 2010 and is working to a downward trajectory is testament to its facilities managers who, with support from specialist low-carbon technology and employee engagement organisations, such as Envido, are helping to dramatically decarbonise what is one of Europe’s largest organisations.

Can doctors help combat climate change?

Doctors have probably come to the right decision in the poll. The major areas of carbon reduction, namely buildings, transport and procurement are out of the their skillset and remit. However, many of the widely publicised practical ideas doctors can help combat climate change are neatly summarised into key 5 areas for action in a recent BMJ blog post by Mike Knapton and Tom Pierce:

Helping people eat better and move better

Enabling women to have control over their fertility

Targeting prescribing on those most likely to benefit

Promoting a greater sense of belonging

Helping people manage a better death

Envido’s healthcare energy team can help to develop and implement a cost-neutral energy reduction programme across the NHS estate, drastically reduce carbon emissions and cut energy costs.

Here is a news summary of the major energy and carbon news that impacting on UK business, industry and the public sector this week

UK clean energy investment springs back – after sluggish 2010

Investment in the UK’s clean energy sector made a strong comeback last year – growing by 35% after struggling in 2010 – with offshore wind “poised” to create significant future investments according to a new report ‘Who’s Winning the Clean Energy Race?’ by the Pew charitable trust.

UK greenhouse gas emissions down 7% in 2011

Official government statistics estimate that UK greenhouse gas emissions covered by the Kyoto Protocol were down 7% in 2011.

UK Deputy PM argues green can mean growth

The UK needs to marry green energy and economical growth in order to combat the difficulties of a rocky recession, the UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said.

Defra’s delay on introducing mandatory carbon reporting is frustrating

Carbon reporting has strong business support and offers clear benefits to business, the environment and the UK economy

The recent announcement by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to delay its decision on introducing mandatory carbon reporting was a real source of frustration for the CBI and the wider business community. This is one piece of regulation that enjoys clear business support, offering the possibility of major cost savings and, ultimately, reduced emissions.

Manufacturers link energy management to competitiveness

A new report suggests that manufacturers and companies in the industrial supply chain need to accelerate their energy efficiency initiatives even more if they are to remain competitive.

The Salix funding deadline may have passed this week, but for project business cases at an advanced still submit them.

That is the advice from Envido’s Terry Barton who explains that, “not all projects that receive initial funding go ahead with the funds recycled among remaining applicants.”

He advises energy managers that are planning energy-saving projects with a sub-five year payback to submit them to Salix as soon as possible, as “ Salix have indicated to Envido that applications submitted over the next 10 days will still be added to their funding pipeline, particularly if your £/CO2 saving is attractive.”

Envido can help complete Salix applications and install a range of low-carbon technologies. For an initial consultation, contact us or call 0207 199 0090 or complete the form below:
